Building a Stronger Southfield

Through the Southfield Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative (SNRI), vacant and foreclosed homes have been transformed into safe, attractive residences that strengthen our neighborhoods.

The Southfield Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative (SNRI) is a collaborative program approved by the Southfield City Council, supported by the Southfield Non-Profit Neighborhood Corporation (SNPNC), and carried out with the construction expertise of Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County.

Since its launch in 2016, SNRI has worked to:

  • Maintain and promote safe, attractive neighborhoods.

  • Support and grow residential property values.

  • Reduce neighborhood blight.

  • Prevent speculative buyers from purchasing Southfield homes at the Oakland County tax auction.

  • Limit the concentration of rental properties.

A Proven Success for Southfield—A Record of Results

Over the past decade, SNRI has fulfilled its intent in warding off housing profit-driven investors who do not maintain or build value in the City’s housing stock, as Southfield residential property values have stabilized and grown. The program has enhanced the safety, aesthetics, and overall appeal of neighborhoods, while improving property values and the City’s tax base—making Southfield attractive to existing and new homeowners and businesses.

Looking Back, Looking Ahead

As we approach the 10th anniversary of SNRI, it is important to reflect on what has been achieved and what lessons can guide us moving forward.  SNRI is an outstanding, proactive program that delivers measurable results for all homeowners.  Furthermore, SNRI demonstrates how a strong partnership between residents, nonprofits, and city leadership can address challenges and create long-term benefits.

The Southfield Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative (SNRI) is more than just a housing program. This is an investment in the quality of life for every resident. By preventing speculative buyers from acquiring properties and preventing homes from sitting vacant, SNRI protects neighborhood stability, preserves property values, and maintains a strong tax base.

But the impact goes far beyond housing. A strong tax base means Southfield can deliver the essential services residents count on every day: responsive police and fire protection; well-maintained infrastructure; and safe, welcoming parks and public spaces.

These are the things that not only keep families secure, but, also, make a city vibrant, livable, and attractive for future generations. By enhancing safety, stability, and lifestyle, the program benefits every resident and builds pride in the city we call home.

This site provides an overview of SNRI’s role in revitalizing Southfield’s housing stock, encouraging responsible homeownership, and contributing to the overall health and vitality of our neighborhoods.

What Is SNRI?

The Southfield Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative, launched in 2016, is a community partnership among the City of Southfield, the Southfield Non-Profit Neighborhood Corporation, and Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County. Together, we’ve rehabilitated homes, built new homes on cleared lots when a home was beyond saving, reduced blight, raised property values, and strengthened Southfield’s tax base.
